Inhabitants of the valley have been moving on to the alpine pasture of Emaney each summer since more than a century. In the past, families had got more livestocks than today, and farming was in the hearth of the social organisation. As a consequence, each single place with grass were grazed. In summer, families moved on to alpines pastures and made cheese. The original chalet of Emaney was restaured in 1995. The living space undergone a modernisation, whereas the place where the cheese is made are still as in past (of course, the know-how evolved, but it remained authentic, with the milk heated on a wood fire).
Today, the Alp is exploited by Jean-Marc and Claudine Gabioud together with their son Thomas and his girlfriend Aurélie. From mid-June to mid-September, the familly works with a herd of about thirty-five cows (Holstein and Hérens). The cheese is made every day. Pigs, calved, goats, chicken, cats, dog and ycks spend also the summer on the Alp.
